Internet Shopping Security
1. Is it safe to shop on the Internet?
Yes, provided you follow some simple security measures, which are detailed below.
2. What securities features should I look for?
Just as shopping malls have security guards, the Internet too has its own virtual security system. However, you must be aware that not all merchants provide these features. Here’s what you should look out for:
- Encryption: This process scrambles your card details to ensure that only the intended merchant gets the message. SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the most common form of encryption. You will know if it is activated if an unbroken key or (lock symbol) appears in the bottom corner of your screen. The ‘http’ on the merchant’s web address will also change to ‘https://’.
- Security details: If a website is secure, it will feature a section which details the security measures.
3. How else can I protect myself?
It is prudent to have a Credit Card with a low credit limit exclusively for use on the Internet, like the In-Site Card from HSBC. This will limit your liability in case of a fraud. Also monitor your monthly card statements very carefully and report any suspicious activity within 30 days of the statement date.
4. What are the common problems related to Internet shopping?
Most problems can be traced back to dishonest merchants or misleading websites. Most complaints relate to cardholders paying more than they had expected or not receiving goods exactly as ordered. You can avoid these problems by choosing reputable merchants/websites.
5. What hidden costs should I be wary of while shopping on the Internet?
Never assume that the listed price is the final price. Always read the fine print. Check the delivery charges, the return policy, insurance cover, taxes, the transaction currency, exchange rates etc.
6. How can I keep track of my orders?
It is very important to keep a record of your online purchases. Once you have placed an order, save the purchase order on your computer or print a copy. Make sure you include the purchase confirmation number, purchase price and any relevant information.
7. What if I am uncertain about a merchant/website?
It is always advisable to shop from websites that are secure. However, if you need something from a website, which is not secure, make a small purchase as a trial measure first.
8. What should I do if my In-Site Card is lost or stolen?
Please call 0800 22044 (24 hours service) immediately and report the loss. You will not be responsible for any unauthorised transactions once the loss is reported.
